"Wado Ryu" means "Way of Peace and Harmony," reflecting Ohtsuka’s goal of resolving conflict without violence. "Karate" means "Empty Hand."
Wado Ryu Karate stands out from other Japanese karate styles for its blend of soft, flowing movements with strong, powerful techniques. In addition to basic punches and kicks, students learn to shift their bodies to deflect attacks, throw off the opponent's balance, and create openings for counterattacks. It was founded in 1934 by Hironori Ohtsuka Sensei, who combined Jiu-jitsu and Shotokan Karate to create a softer, more natural style of self-defense.
